Music Practice as Embodied Presence
What interests me most about making music is how it expresses the life of the body. Musical intelligence is not only for performance, but is a part of everyone's daily life. Developing the capacity to make music is deeply satisfying and is a lifelong asset for living well. Using your fingers at the piano and learning to sing are complementary skills that open up a pathway to make music a creative self-sustaining practice.
I am skilled at finding pieces and exercises that are tailored to your level of experience. Playing the piano is engaging, rewarding and fun from the get-go and gives you the inspiration to make music an active enriching part of daily life. Taking lessons gives you the motivation, feedback and structure to stay engaged and progress.
If you are an experienced musician, my lessons will re-energize your enthusiasm and give you fresh motivation. If you are a beginner, finding the right teacher makes all the difference. My students are of diverse backgrounds and ages.
The power and ease of singing well comes from being grounded in your body. The body is your instrument when you sing. Singing is effortless when you have an active sense of physical support and balance from foot soles, through the legs and spine to the crown of the head.
Using your voice gives motivation and feeds musical creativity. I can show you how to making warming-up the voice and tuning-in the ear a regular and satisfying practice. If you are working on a particular repertoire for audition or performance I help you to rehearse effectively and provide a piano accompaniment.
I am an experienced piano accompanist with excellent sight-reading and transposing skills. I can provide piano accompaniments for singers, instrumentalists, choirs, bands and other musical ensembles.
I have been providing piano accompaniment for silent movies since 1986. Visual story-telling has always inspired my gift of improvisation. I have played for hundreds of silent films of every style and genre . My love of the cinema motivates me to find the music that makes a film from the past come alive for a present-day audience.
