developing personal expression at the piano
My teacher Bruce is not the "typical" piano teacher who makes his students practice for hours and hours each day to have each piece of music played to perfection. Instead, I consider a man of creativity and happiness. While he encourages me to practice the finger exercises and classical pieces that he assigns, he continually reminds me how I have talent for improvisation.
Since my very first lesson, I have created different "stories" with Bruce on the piano. Each week, we switch off between being the bass and the melody. The story is always different and exciting. Now into my twelfth year of playing the piano, I still look forward to writing new stories with Bruce ach week, as well as learning the new pieces by Beethoven and Bach. What he has taught me through improvisation has given me a voice. People who know me would consider me to be a relatively quiet person, but with Bruce, I am able to express who I am in my own unique way.
