Piano lessons stuck when I was a boy. I took to Bach immediately upon first acquaintance. As a teenager I became fascinated with Baroque Music. When I entered the Music Department at UC Berkeley, I studied harpsichord with Laurette Goldberg. Professor Alan Curtis was an important influence for me then. I spent a year at the Royal Dutch Conservatory in the Hague studying harpsichord with Bob van Asperen and pursuing my passion for early music in the music scene centered around the great Dutch harpsichordist, Gustave Leonhardt. It was tenor Marius van Altena who first helped me realize that singing was a talent that I wanted to cultivate. When I returned to Berkeley to finish my BA in Music I studied voice with Dickson Titus.
After graduating I spent two years enrolled as a voice student at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem. I was also a member of The Cameran Singers directed by Avner Itai and toured throughout Israel and in Europe as well.
I started playing for silent movies in 1986 at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley. Playing for silent films at many venues across the country and regularly at the Essanay Silent Film Museum has been an outlet for my gift of improvisation in providing atmosphere and telling a story through music.
Since 1986 I have been teaching piano, voice and working as a vocal coach. My own experience has taught me the importance of being centered and grounded in body structure. I have trained extensively in Eutony, Yoga, Pilates, Modern Dance Technique, and Wild Goose Qigong. My experience in all these modalities informs my teaching.
I am on the faculty of San Francisco Community Music Center and am a member of the Music Teachers Association (MTAC)
